Following up the acclaimed best-selling movie, Bernadette, the story of the apparitions of Our Lady in Lourdes to Bernadette Soubirous, this beautiful Jean Delannoy film tells the rest of the story of her life after the Marian visions- the life that made Bernadette a saint. The grotto at Lourdes is flourishing with many pilgrims, and Bernadette leaves to enter the convent of the sisters of Nevers to dedicate her life to God. Under the harsh rule of the Novice Mistress who "doesn't believe in apparitions", Bernadette, now Sister Marie Bernard, begins her life of achieving sanctity through prayer, faith, suffering, and deep charity toward all. With another moving performance by actress Sydney Penny, this film reveals incessant illness and suffering that St. Bernadette patiently, even cheerfully endured throughout her life in the convent, often repeating her prayer to "suffer and offer it to God." She went to her eternal reward in 1879, at the age of 35. When her body was exhumed many years later, it was found to be incorrupt. Today she lays in rest in a glass case in the chapel of the Sisters of Nevers, where millions have come to see "the little saint of Lourdes."

Sergio Castelitto (Mostly Martha) stars as the famous Italian saint, Padre Pio (1887-1968). Like Saint Francis of Assisi, Padre Pio had the stigmata: the wounds of Christ visible on his body. Throughout his life, he performed miracles of healings, caring for both the physically sick as well as those with spiritual illnesses. Filled with gorgeous scenery from the Italian countryside, this film follows Padre Pio's life from a young boy through his death. Director Carlo Carlei (Flight of the Innocent) captures the humility, humor and common sense of St. Pio, as well as showing the persecution he suffered from both satanic attacks and misguided Church officials who distrusted him. This is the acclaimed dramatic feature film made in France in 1960 that tells the story of the life of Therese of Lisieux from childhood through her death as a Carmelite nun at age 24. Film critics have called it “an excellent, reverent biopic” on St. Therese that accurately portrays the saint’s story and her unique spirituality in a very appealing performance by French actress France Descaut. The movie offers numerous glimpses into Therese’s “little way” of spiritual childhood, (her particular charism that helped make her a Doctor of the Church) including situations of conflict between Therese and her mother prioress regarding her conviction of striving for perfection with confidence and trust in the mercy and love of God. Beautifully filmed in black and white, with fine performances by the whole cast, this film is an unsung cinematic gem that captures the spirit and life of the beloved St. Therese.
“Blending historical drama with elements of documentary, Miracle of Saint Thérèse effectively brings the saint’s story and spirituality to life... Beautifully shot in black and white, the film makes excellent use of convincing locations, sets and costumes, and is persuasively mounted throughout.”— Steven Greydanus, National Catholic Register This DVD has the available language options: English and Spanish. Flavio Insinna gives a winning performance as John (Don) Bosco, the great priest and educator of youth from the tough streets of Turin, Italy. Beautifully filmed in Italy, this epic movie dramatizes the many challenges that Don Bosco had to overcome from this childhood through founding his religious order, the Salesians, for helping educate boys. Growing up without a father gave him compassion for the many orphans that he cared for, while he faced persecution from both secular society and the Church as he fought to build a place to house and educate the homeless, outcast youth of Turin. His deep faith, creative imagination and profound charity shine through in this wonderful film. Also stars Charles Dance (Gosford Park) and popular Italian singer and actress Lina Sastri.

Legendary actor Omar Sharif gives a deeply moving, authentic portrayal in this epic film about St. Peter, the leader of the Apostles and first Pope, filmed on location in Europe. As a dedicated follower of Christ, Peter spreads the message of the Christians across the land, often staying only one step ahead of those determined to persecute him. As the tension between the Christians and the Romans grows, blood runs in the streets and the apostles lose St. Paul to martyrdom. On the road to Damascus Peter comes face-to-face with a stranger who shows him the only way—he must put himself on the cross in order to bring peace to Rome.
Beautifully filmed with outstanding cinematography, and excellent acting from a strong cast, especially the spiritually rich performance by Sharif, this is considered by many as the best film portrait ever made of St. Peter. Also stars Flavio Insinna, Daniele Pecci, Lina Sastri and Claudia Koll. |
